Multiplexer circuit

Multiplexer circuit

Multiplexer is a combinational circuit that has maximum of 2n data inputs, 'n' selection lines and single output line. One of these data inputs will be connected to the output based on the values of selection lines. Since there are 'n' selection lines, there will be 2n possible combinations of zeros and ones.

What is multiplexer with example?

Multiplexer means many into one. A multiplexer is a circuit used to select and route any one of the several input signals to a single output. A simple example of an non-electronic circuit of a multiplexer is a single pole multi-position switch. Multi-position switches are widely used in many electronics circuits.

Why is multiplexer used?

The purpose of multiplexing is to combine and transmit signals over a single shared medium in order to optimize efficiency and decrease the total cost of communication.

What does a 2 to 1 multiplexer circuit do?

A 2-to-1 multiplexer consists of two inputs D0 and D1, one select input S and one output Y. Depending on the select signal, the output is connected to either of the inputs. Since there are two input signals, only two ways are possible to connect the inputs to the outputs, so one select is needed to do these operations.

Where is a multiplexer used?

In telephone networks, multiple audio signals are integrated on a single line of transmission with the help of a multiplexer. The multiplexer is used to transmit the data signals from the computer system of a spacecraft or a satellite to the ground system by using a GSM satellite.

What is multiplexer and types?

It is the process in which multiple signals coming from multiple sources are combined and transmitted over a single communication/physical line. There are three types of Multiplexing : Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM)

Is multiplexer a decoder or encoder?

An encoder with enable pins is called multiplexer while a decoder with enable pins is called demultiplexer.

What is multiplexer and decoder?

Multiplexer is a data selector which takes several inputs and gives a single output. In multiplexer we have 2n input lines and 1 output lines where n is the number of selection lines. 2. Decoder : Decoder is a logic circuit which n input lines into m output lines.

Which IC works as a multiplexer?

IC numberFunctionOutput State
741518:1 multiplexerInverted output
74153Dual 4-to-1 multiplexerOutput is equal to input
74352Dual 4-to-1 multiplexerInverted output
74157Quad 2-to-1 multiplexerOutput is equal to input

What is the final output of a multiplexer?

What is the final output of a multiplexer? Solution: 120. A digital modulation technique which is a form of constant – amplitude angle modulation similar to standard frequency modulation except the modulating signal is binary signal that varies between two discreet voltage levels.

What is meant by multiplexing?

In telecommunications and computer networking, multiplexing (sometimes contracted to muxing) is a method by which multiple analog or digital signals are combined into one signal over a shared medium. The aim is to share a scarce resource - a physical transmission medium.

What are the basic requirements of multiplexer?

=> In electronics, a multiplexer is a device that selects one of several analog or digital input signals and forwards the selected input into a single line. A multiplexer of 2n inputs has select lines, which are used to select which input line to send to the outputs.

How do you test a multiplexer?

To test the function of a digital multiplexer each channel needs to be selected an toggled with a Low and High logic level and the changes can be test on the output. To detect also shortages between the channels the other inputs should have the opposite logic level.

How do you find the output of a multiplexer?

Procedure:

  1. Firstly truth table is constructed for the given multiplexer.
  2. Select lines in multiplexer are considered as input for the truth table.
  3. Output in truth table can be four forms i.e. ( 0, 1, Q, Q').
  4. Now with the help of truth table we find the extended expression.

How many input wires does a multiplexer have?

In its simplest form, a multiplexer will have two signal inputs, one control input, and one output. An example of this would be a home stereo unit that allows the user to switch between the audio of the CD player, the DVD player, or the cable television line.

Is multiplexer a universal gate?

The multiplexer or MUX is used to implement the Boolean functions or any of the logic gates, and it is called as universal logic. The main application of multiplexer is to select from one of the inputs and hence called as the switch.

What are the two main types of multiplexers?

There are mainly two types of multiplexers, namely analog and digital. They are further divided into Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM), Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM), and Time Division Multiplexing (TDM).

How many outputs does a multiplexer have?

A multiplexer is a combinational circuit that has 2n input lines and a single output line. Simply, the multiplexer is a multi-input and single-output combinational circuit.

Which IC is used for decoder?

3 to 8 line decoder IC 74HC238 is used as a decoder/ demultiplexer. 3 to 8 line decoder demultiplexer is a combinational circuit that can be used as both a decoder and a demultiplexer. IC 74HC238 decodes three binary address inputs (A0, A1, A2) into eight outputs (Y0 to Y7). The device also has three Enable pins.

What is difference between decoder and encoder?

1. The combinational circuits that modify the binary data into N output lines are known as Encoders. The combinational circuits that convert the binary data into 2N output lines are called Decoders.
